    What Does the Google PageSpeed Score Mean?

    Cumulative Layout Shift — 25%

    How much page content jumps around while loading — buttons moving, text shifting when images appear.

    First Contentful Paint — 10%

    When the first text or image appears on screen — the moment the blank white page ends.

    Target: under 1.8 seconds.

    SI

    Speed Index — 10%

    How quickly content is visually displayed during load — a composite measure of perceived speed.

    Lab data vs field data — the critical difference

    PageSpeed Insights shows two types of data. Confusing them leads to wrong decisions.

    Lab

    Lighthouse simulation

    Runs in a controlled environment: simulated mobile device, throttled 4G connection, clean browser cache. Gives you the 0–100 score and specific recommendations.

    Field

    CrUX — real user data

    Collected from actual Chrome users who visited your site in the last 28 days. Shows the 75th percentile of LCP, INP, and CLS — no single score, just pass/fail per metric.

    Your lab score and field data can differ significantly

    A site can score 95/100 in Lighthouse but show "Poor" INP in field data — because real users on slow devices and poor networks experience something the lab simulation does not capture. Always check both. Field data in Search Console is the ground truth for SEO impact.

    Common misconceptions about the PageSpeed score

    "Google ranks sites by PageSpeed score"

    Not exactly. Google uses Core Web Vitals from real user data (CrUX) as a ranking signal — not the Lighthouse score directly. A site with 70/100 lab score but good field CWV can outrank a site with 95/100 lab score and poor field CWV.

    "100/100 is the goal"

    Chasing a perfect score often means removing functionality users need — live chat, analytics, personalisation. 90+ on mobile with good field Core Web Vitals is the practical target for business sites.

    "The score changes every time I test — it's unreliable"

    Normal. Network conditions, server load, and third-party script availability vary between runs. Run 3–4 tests and look at the median. For trends, use Search Console field data over weeks, not single tests.

    "Desktop score is what matters"

    No. Google uses mobile-first indexing. Your mobile score and mobile field CWV determine your ranking. Desktop 100/100 with mobile 40/100 means you rank based on 40.
